For Immediate Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 16, 2019) – Pepco and the District Department of Employment Services (DOES) celebrated the first graduates to complete the Pepco Utility Training School program at the D.C. Infrastructure Academy (DCIA). Pepco and DOES held a celebration for graduates, families, and friends today at DCIA, to recognize this accomplishment.
Of the 22 students who completed the program, Pepco has offered jobs to 11 of them, with the remaining 11 receiving offers from Pepco contractors of choice. The graduates received certificates of completion for the program, as well as hard hats from signing companies, including Anchor Construction, Dynamic Concepts Inc. (DCI), Fort Myer Construction Company, CW Wright Construction, and UtiliQuest, during the formal graduation ceremony.
Providing remarks at the event for Pepco were: Pepco Holdings President and CEO Dave Velazquez and Pepco Holdings Senior Vice President and COO Tyler Anthony.
"Pepco, and our parent company Exelon, are honored to partner with Mayor Bowser on the DC Infrastructure Academy and the Pepco Utility Training School," said Velazquez. "The DCIA and its programs are shaping futures and providing generation changing opportunities for these graduates and the many students who will continue to walk through its doors. Today, we celebrate the first-ever graduates of this program, who are bringing to life all our ideals and goals of teaching District residents the skills to join the infrastructure workforce."
"Having a high-caliber workforce — both for our internal employees and our contractors — is the foundation of Pepco's success. We could not succeed in delivering the highest quality of service to our customers without them," said Anthony. "We know that the future graduates of DCIA will have big boots to fill coming after this group, but they will also continue building this foundational workforce. We can't wait to see more exciting things in the years to come."
In May, Pepco cut the ribbon on its new utility training yard at DCIA, to enhance training and hands on learning opportunities for participants.
