Sligo to Linden Underground Line

Overview

At Pepco, our purpose is providing safe, reliable, and affordable energy for our customers. As part of our commitment to meet the growing demand for electric service and to enhance the capacity and reliability of our system, Pepco plans to upgrade the electric system infrastructure in the downtown Silver Spring area, with portions of work also occurring in Montgomery County.

Key Components and Benefits

  • Installing three new 69kV underground lines between the Sligo and Linden substations, increasing the area reliability
  • Replacing aging infrastructure that is near the end of its service life
  • Upgrading and installing new equipment at each substation, further improving reliability for customers

Project Timeline and Construction

Construction for this project will begin near Sligo substation in November 2018 and will continue through May 2021. The work will affect traffic along several roads including Georgia Avenue, Linden Lane, Seminary Road, Hale Place, Fraser Avenue, Montgomery Street, and Brookville Road. Work will typically take place Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. *

*Weekendand/or night work may occur in select locations. Pepco will notify customers in advance of any weekend and/or night work.

Notice of upcoming work:

Pepco will be performing night work for our underground transmission line construction in Downtown Silver Spring on Georgia Ave. between Spring St. and Cameron St. beginning Sunday, February 2, 2020. The work will take place Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., weather permitting. We anticipate completion of our night work in this area by Spring of 2020.

We will also continue to work during the day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The work will require the use of dump trucks, excavators and milling machines. This work will help us expedite completion of this project and minimize daytime lane closures that result in traffic disruption and delays. We will maintain a police presence along with flagging operations and signage to safely guide vehicles and pedestrians through the work zone.

As a result of construction, businesses and residents may experience:

  • Lane closures
  • Detours
  • Decreased accessibility to sidewalks
  • Construction-related noise
