Start Service in MD

How Do I Start Electric Service?

You may request electric service by either calling us at (202) 833-7500 or by completing and submitting the form below. We will be pleased to accept more than one individual customer name on the electric service account, and all individuals who apply for service will have their names listed as customers of record.

Am I Required to Pay a Security Deposit to Start My Account?

We may require new applicants and/or former or present customers to establish or reestablish credit with the company.

Residential applicants can establish credit by demonstrating good paying habits during the preceding two years and/or:

  • Providing a social security number or former address.
  • Certifying three years of continuous employment.
  • Demonstrating that the service address is their principal residence.
  • Otherwise establishing credit to the satisfaction of the company.

Residential applicants 60 years or older are exempted from paying a cash deposit if they are the primary users of service and there are no outstanding utility bills.

Present or former residential customers may be required to reestablish credit under the following conditions:

  • If there is an outstanding bill for a prior residential electric service account.
  • If service was disconnected for non-payment within the last 12 months.
  • If payments were delinquent on more than two occasions in the last 12 months of service.
  • If an electric service account is more than two months in arrears.
  • If the basis on which credit was originally established has substantially changed.

If a Deposit Is Required, How Much Will It Be?

The minimum deposit is $5.00 and, for residential customers, may not exceed the maximum estimated charge for service for two consecutive billing periods.

We may accept a written guarantee of payment from a responsible third party instead of a cash deposit. Call us at (202) 833-7500 for further information about third-party guarantee requirements.

When Will the Deposit Be Returned to Me?

We will promptly refund any deposit - including accrued interest - in excess of unpaid bills when service is discontinued, or when satisfactory credit is established, whichever comes first. Earned interest will be refunded annually upon written request.

Will My Deposit Earn Interest?

Interest on deposits is based on the average one-year Treasury bill rate of the months of September, October and November of the previous year. The rate will change annually on January 15.
